Government Printer in the field

History - Press during the war

After Pretoria was occupied by the British Forces in June 1900, the ZAR was forced to move the Government Printer out of Pretoria.

A Charles Geogre Bancroft owned a printing press and did business in Lydenburg under the name of C. and S. Bancroft Printers, Photographers and Rubber Stamps.

His printing press was used in the field to print 1, 5 and 10 pound notes, known as blue blacks. The printing press was donated to the Lydenburg Town Council in 1965.
