History - The second World War in Southern Africa
The Second World War broke out in Europe on September 3, 1939. There was political division in the Union of South Africa over the participation on the side of Britain.
The Union, despite this, had about 350 000 soldiers in active service by 1945. Amongst these were White and Black Lydenburgers. The South African troops fought in East Africa, Madagascar. North Africa and Italy.
