Traditional teaching: Apart from informal education, the Pedi tribe holds formal initiation schools to prepare children for adulthood. Every few years boys who are of the same age as the son of the tribal chief are circumcised.

Western education: Formal education for Westerners began when the Voortrekker school was erected in 1851. In 1852 Willem Poen began teaching the children. In 1874 an English school was opened with Mr Bates as teacher. By 1884 there were seven government supported schools in the district.
